Synopsis:
Tony Award and MacArthur Genius Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman's breathtaking new production of Candide is the theatrical event of the season. In addition to the music of Leonard Bernstein, Candide features contributions from the greatest lyricists of the 20th century, from Richard Wilbur to Stephen Sondheim. In this racy musical satire, naive Candide is banished for romancing the Baron's daughter, only to be plagued by a series of absurd hardships that challenge his optimistic outlook of life and love.
SEEKING:
1.) MALE (early 20s-mid 30s; any ethnicity) - CANDIDE. Sensitive and charming, Candide has an inner complexity that is endearing and warm. He is handsome and charismatic. TENOR (Low A-High A or C);
2.) FEMALE (early 20s-mid 30s; any ethnicity) - CUNEGONDE. Quirky ingénue with great comedic timing; she is charming and lovely. Others are drawn to her beautiful energy and open creative spirit. SORPRANO (Low A-High E-flate above high C);
3.) MALE (late 40s-mid 60s; any ethnicity) - PANGLOSS. Scrawny and lecherous. Pangloss is mischievous with a devilish appeal. Odd and off putting to others he is ironically optimistic. The first tutor to Candide. BASS/BASS BARITONE (Low G-High E);
4.) MALE (late 40s-mid 60s; any ethnicity) - MARTIN. He is the anti-Pangloss. Sweet natured yet cynical. Charming-relax disposition. He sits on the back of his heels-commenting on human nature. He is the second tutor to Candide. BARITONE (Low A-High F);
5.) MALE (30s-mid 40s; any ethnicity) - MAXMILLIAN. Vein and self centered. Maxmillian is always aware of his appearance. He is set in his way and blind to the feelings and wants of others. He is handsome with a great stature. BARITONE/TENOR (Low A-High G);
6.) FEMALE (early 20s-late 30s; any ethnicity) - PAQUETTE. Seductive and charming. Paquette is the saucy maid; with great comedic timing. She will play multiple characters. True MEZZO/SOPRANO (Low A-E);
7.) FEMALE (50+: any ethnicity) - OLD LADY. The supreme comedic character; she is spunky and amusing. Seeking a great character actor who sings. MEZZO (Low G-High G or A);
8.) MALE (early 20s-mid 30s; any ethnicity) - CACAMBO. Right hand man and advisor to Candide. Cacambo is sly and quick with great comedic charm. Small in stature; witty and smart. Open Vocal Range for this role;
9.) MALE (early 40s-early 60s; any ethnicity) - GOVERNOR. Powerful and manipulative; he has a menacing quality that is disturbing to others. Seeking a great character actor who is malleable and able to play multiple roles. TENOR (Middle E-flat-High Bb) |
